Chris Moneymaker Returns at $10K WCOOP #5 Final Table!
September 7, 2008
Team PokerStars member Chris Moneymaker, whose $10,000 WSOP Main Event win in 2003 skyrocketed the popularity of online poker into another stratosphere, made a VERY impressive final table this evening during Event #5 of the World Championship of Online Poker!
Moneymaker, who has been on the short end of the pwnage stick when its come to poker discussions on top forums on the interwebs, has had a rough time making final tables since his breakthrough M.E. win in ‘03. Many people, including some of his own peers, have found it laughable that he’s even been such a vital part of Team PokerStars for such a long period of time.
Well, tonight was the night where he got to prove a lot of the haters out there that he wasn’t just some one-hit wonder….
In one of the most talked about events of the WCOOP series this year, the $10,000 No Limit Hold Em event #5 featured some of the game’s BIGGEST players participating. The 321-person field generated a prizepool of over $3,000,000 and would see online poker’s young guns and live poker’s greats make some pretty deep runs toward the final table.
And although professional players Steamraise aka Daniel Alaei and TheProfess aka Ted Forrest finished in 13th and 20th, respectively, it was Moneymaker’s deep run that surprised a lot of people, myself included. He would make the final table with a decent stack, and played some great poker from what I saw on the rail. With a final 9 that featured online greats #1PEN and gbmantis, it was no doubt that Moneymaker held his own like a world champion again.
After a couple dozen hands into the final table, 3 players would end up going out before Moneymaker - who plays under the name Money800. However, he found his stack decreasing as the blinds got bigger, and Moneymaker ended up pushing UTG with a weak Ace and found himself going up against pocket Kings! When the board blanked out, it was Moneymaker would be out in 5th place, pocketing nearly $180k for his great efforts.
We hope to see this caliber of play from Moneymaker again, and maybe see him at another WPT or WSOP final table someday. It’ll be fun to see what the forum junkies will have to say about his performance in this event, right? I think he’ll definitely be savoring this moment for a while regardless.
