Hockey Legend Mats Sundin Signs With Team PokerStars

Hockey legend and free agent Mats Sundin has just signed a new contract, however not with another hockey team. His newest position will be on the felt as poker player and brand ambassador for Team PokerStars.  Sundin will be playing online poker under the username MatsSundin on PokerStars.com and participating in sponsored events including the European Poker Tour (EPT).  The EPT Barcelona, which takes place from September 10^th through September 14^th, will be the first event he will participate in.

Sundin is a three-time Winter Olympian for which he has three medals under his belt and four World Championship medals as well. The former Toronto Maple Leafs player has received many offers since becoming a free agent including from the Vancouver Canucks.  In fact, the Canucks offered Sundin a two-year $20 million dollar contract to play for them. However, PokerStars went all in and ended up with Sundin as the top prize.  Landing this impressive athlete is quite a coo for them as this Swedish hockey player had been sitting on the fence as to whether or not he wanted to continue on with his NHL hockey career.

Mats Sundin said in his official statement, “I have always enjoyed playing poker and partnering with PokerStars gives me the opportunity to challenge myself and explore the full potential of my game. I believe the fighting spirit I’ve developed as a hockey pro will really help me at the tables. Sundin is looking at this opportunity as another means in furthering his work with charities.  The Swedish hockey star states, “…I will be donating 100 percent of the money I earn from playing poker charity.”
