John Phan Reigns Victorious at WPT Legends Main Event

August 29, 2008

It was an exciting afternoon at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California in The 2008 World Poker Tour Legends Main Event. Right of the cusp of winning two WSOP bracelets and a fifth place win at the World Poker Tour Bellagio Cup IV, John Phan brought the house down with a first place $1,091,428 cash win. The poker tournament which began August 23rd seated several of the world’s poker greats including Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu, Allen Cunningham and the first lady of poker, Barbara Enright.

The final six seats culminated with five first time WPT final table players Trong Nguyen, Amit Makhija, Paul Smith, Zachary Clark and Kyle Wilson and back to back WPT final table player John Phan. Battling a rocky road to the top, Phan managed to knock out Makhija in heads-up action, who had held the chip lead at the beginning of final table play. Phan engaged in a heads-up war against Makhija for almost three and a half treacherous hours.

On the final hand, Amit Makhija made the bold move to push all in preflop against Phan, who subsequently made the call. K-7 was the hand Makhija turned up, with Phan flipping over a wired pair of 3’s. The Q-5-5 flop brought Makjija a few cards closer to the felt. When an Ace popped out on the turn, it gave Phan’s opponent even more outs to win the hand. However, the river card was a 10 which allowed Phan to reign victorious.

WPT Commentator, Mike Sexton told the audience it was the “greatest heads-up match in WPT history.” In addition to over a million dollars in cash, John “The Razor” Phan also received the coveted gold bracelet to grace his wrist. Second place finisher Amit Makhija walked away with $563,320 for his hard efforts.
