“November Nine” Member Hires Poker Coach Roy Winston.

Dennis Phillips, who is the current chip leader of the yet-to-be-played WSOP Main Event final table, made a huge announcement this week that just might make him a tad more intimidating come November.

According to media reports, Phillip has hired poker professional Roy Winston of Oracle Poker Consulting to fine-tune his game before the ‘November Nine‘ battle it out for the $9.1 million dollar first-place prize. Winston, who won the Borgata Poker Open in 2007, is one of the most experienced tournament veterans in the world. He brings with him a wealth of experience on the poker circuit, and should be able to improve Dennis’s game even more when he begins mentoring him in the coming weeks.

“Dennis’s play so far has been extraordinary. My partner Joe McGowan and I are going to help with his preparation for the challenges he will face not only at the final table, but on the way there,” said Winston. “This is a unique experience to have weeks to prepare before play and we want Dennis to have every opportunity and will be there with him along the way.”

It is unknown how much Roy Winston’s services are, but I could only imagine they aren’t too cheap. Dennis Phillips is of course the first player of the remaining nine that have gone ahead and hired a poker coach. This sort of move was expected to be utilized by some, if not most, of the final players. With this much money on the line it’s something that would only benefit them, especially when it comes to getting more acclimated to the felt and the game in general after a four-month layoff.

The final table for the 2008 WSOP Main Event is expected to air on November 11th. We’ll keep you all updated if any similar news comes about from these last 9 players in regards to poker coaches. Time will tell us all if this bold move by Phillips will be a profitable one.

He has 9.1 million reasons to think it should be though, right?
