Glen Witmer Wins WPT North American Poker Championship.
October 18, 2008
After 6 grueling days of play at the WPT North American Poker Championship, the TV final table proved to be one of the best the NAPC had seen in a few years. Headlined by 5 of Canada’s top pros, the action would no doubt prove to be VERY entertaining as the television lights began to beam down on the remaining players. They had outlasted 448 other entrants to reach this point and their primary focus was taking down 1st place and the roughly $1.09 million that came along with it.
The most notable professional poker players at the table were undoubtedly Kathy Liebert and Gavin Smith. Both are primarily tournament players and both have won countless millions on the live MTT circuit. But despite their obvious accomplishments though, it would be a little unknown by the name of Glen Witmer that would enter this TV final table with both a dominating chip stack and lead. Holding 3.7 million chips heading into play, he had a sizeable advantage over Liebert and Smith. He would use this to his favor for the rest of the night, literally chopping up his counterparts limb from limb.
Witmer took out seasoned veteran Ryan Fisler in 4th place, then proceeded to put Kathy Liebert out of her misery in 3rd place - setting up a heads up showdown with one of my favorite players, Gavin Smith. Unfortunately for Gavin, he was down about 3:1 in chips to Witmer at the beginning of HU. It didn’t really get any better for him throughout the match, and on the final hand it would be Gavin Smith’s pocket 5’s going up against the AK suited of Glen Witmer. The race situation seemed to be going well for Smith as he dodged some would-be daggers on the flop and turn. However, the river came an Ace and it was lights out for the PokerRoad superstar.
Glen Witmer took home a little over a million dollars for his win in the 2008 NAPC, with Gavin Smith walking away with $560k and change for 2nd. Congrats to all those who made some moooolah! Heh.
