Poker Legend Amarillo Slim Beaten and Robbed

gr-wsop-amarillo-slim-big Poker Legend Amarillo Slim Beaten and RobbedNews broke yesterday that one of the oldest living legends of poker Amarillo Slim Preston was beating and robbed. The beating was so severe that he ended up in the hospital with a broken hand, broken, jaw, and several other serious injuries. To ad insult to injury he was robbed of $8,000 in cash and a diamond ring worth more than $85,000.

This is not the first time Amarillo has been robbed as he is known to carry large amount of cash and has a reputation for dealing with some shady people. In 2007 Slim was reportedly shot at in his car during a robbery attempt and in 2007, was the victim of a home invasion in which he was beaten, tied up and robbed for an undisclosed amount of money.

The story goes that the former World Series of Poker Champion was attempting to obtain collateral on a debt owed to him.  The debt he was owed was $3,000 and he was merely trying to collect some kind of down payment on the amount.  According to Amarillo Police Lieutenant Jim McKenny, Slim met his assailant at an agreed to location, an open field where he thought he would be picking up some type of 4-wheeler as the collateral.

New like this adds fuel to the fire for anti-online gaming groups that want to continue painting the entire poker world as a bunch of gun toting violet scumbags. Of course this incident is unfortunate, but it is not typical of the modern day poker world. Several of the last WSOP champions have donated millions of dollars to childrens’ charities and organizations, but that never seems to make the news.

In 1972, Thomas “Amarillo Slim” Preston took home the winning spot. This was also the year that interest in the WSOP began to increase. Amarillo Slim is credited by developing awareness of the tournament by making appearances on popular talk shows like Johnny Carson.

Another item that has led to an increase in the WSOP entries is the increase in the popularity of online poker and televised poker. Online satellites have made it easier for amateur players to win spots in the WSOP, while televised poker has inspired millions to learn the game of poker.
