October 6, 2008

United States poker player Michael Martin wins big at the 5th Annual PokerStars.com European Poker Tour London Open. It was held at The Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London with a £5,200 No Limit Hold’em buy-in this past weekend. There were a total of 596 players, 234 of which were PokerStars players who entered the PokerStars EPT London which boasted a prize pool of £3,349,200. Martin walked away with a record-breaking cash prize of £1,000,000.

The Executive Producer of the EPT John Duthie commented, “This year’s EPT London has been a phenomenal success with a record amount of players. An amazing standard of players competed at this event for the record £1 million first prize.”

Trailing way behind at the final table, Martin with only 95,000 chips left in front of him, went from underdog to top-dog just shy of ten minutes. In the process, he managed to knock out fourth place US poker pro Eric Liu and third place Team PokerStars Pro Marcin Horecki. It was head-up action between Michael and Mike Tureniec, a PokerStars qualifier from Sweden. The final hand resulted in Martin with pocket fours against Tureniec’s K9. When a four appeared on the turn, the tournament was over with Michael Martin as the 2008 EPT London victor!

This first place win comes after the 24 year old former college hockey player placed 5th in last season’s EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo. Martin also placed 2nd in last year’s Amsterdam Master Classics. Michael Tureniec took home £525,314 for his efforts as the second place winner. Martin was among top company as he competed with German tennis legend and PokerStars Ambassador Boris Becker, 22 members from Team PokerStars as well as World Champs Chris Moneymaker, Joe Hachem, Greg Raymer and recent PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Champion, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier.
